The Most Important Question
How to Be Saved
The question is as old as humanity itself. And the answer has never changed.
Somewhere along the way, every honest person asks it. Maybe you are asking it right now.
When the gospel was first preached in Jerusalem, the people who heard it were cut to the heart. They did not argue. They did not change the subject. They asked the only question that mattered:
“Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Acts 2:37 (KJV)That is the right question. And there is a real answer – not a feeling, not a vague hope, but a plain pattern that God laid down and has never taken back. We did not invent it. We are simply unwilling to change it.
Why we need to be saved
Saved from what? From sin, and from the separation sin creates between us and God. This is not a small thing dressed up in religious language. It is the deepest fracture in every human life.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)Every one of us. Not just the obvious sinner – all of us. And sin is not free. It carries a wage, and the wage is death: physical death, and eternal separation from the God who made us.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)If the story ended there, it would be hopeless. It does not end there.
What God did about it
God did not send a substitute or a representative. God came Himself. The One who made you stepped into His own creation, took on flesh, and bore in His own body the penalty your sin had earned.
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh…”
1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)The name of that flesh is Jesus – which means Jehovah is salvation. He is not one of three Gods, and not merely a good man. He is the one true God revealed in a body, and there is salvation in no other name.
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

So when the crowd cried out, “What shall we do?”, the apostle Peter did not leave them guessing. Filled with the same Spirit Jesus had promised, he gave them the answer the whole church has preached ever since:
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Acts 2:38 (KJV)Three things. Not three steps you climb to earn God’s favor, but the way God Himself chose to wash you, fill you, and make you new. Here is what each one means.
Repent
Repentance is a change of heart that turns into a change of direction. It is honestly agreeing with God about your sin and turning away from it to turn toward Him. It is not merely feeling sorry – it is laying the sin down. “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)
Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ
Full-immersion water baptism, in the name of Jesus, for the remission of sins. This is exactly how the apostles baptized every convert in the book of Acts – not in a title, but in the name. “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” (Acts 10:48) “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:17)
Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
This is God’s own Spirit coming to live inside you – the new birth Jesus said you must have. When the believers first received it, they were filled and “began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4) That same experience followed the gospel everywhere it went (Acts 10:46; Acts 19:6). It is still the promise today.
This promise is for you
Maybe you think you have wandered too far, or waited too long, or done too much. Peter answered that fear in the very next breath:
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
Acts 2:39 (KJV)That includes you. Not the version of you that has it all together – the one reading this right now. If God is stirring something in your heart, that is Him calling. You do not have to understand everything to begin. You only have to come.
